Winter does not officially start until December 21st but whether you are a Game of Thrones fans or not, Winter is coming. For those who have not watched the fantasy drama television series, the meaning behind these words is one of warning and constant vigilance. Let’s focus on the latter.
Storms and rain showers are a natural phenomenon that is top of mind for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). Year round we are preparing, planning and gearing up for wet weather. This year, we’ve expanded our Floodwater Grant Assistance Program. If your home or business has experienced flooding or sewage backups during rainstorms, you may qualify for up to $100,000 reimbursements for a flood protection project. What does that mean for you? If you qualify, the SFPUC may reimburse you for the cost to upgrade your business or home to become more resilient in the event of heavy rains.
We are offering informational webinars where you will hear from our Floodwater Grant Administrator talk about the process, eligibilty criteria, the application process, and will even share resources including a list of contractors with relevant experience to give you ideas on what flood projects you should consider. Mark your calendars, we are offering two dates: November 18 from 12-1 pm and December 9th from 5:30-6:30 pm. Both webinars will be exactly the same but we hope giving you two choices helps with your busy schedule.
Aileen Caylao, a project manager for the SFPUC Wastewater Collection System is an administrator for the program. She encourages everyone interested in the Grant to attend. “I hope people can learn a little more about what the SFPUC can offer residents. This is more than just paying your wastewater, power or water bills. This is a resource we hope people take advantage of.”
Caylao is a civil engineer turned project manager. She describes her job as seeing public service through another lens. “We are listening to the community and there are some folks subject to water intrusion from the public right of way. This is an opportunity to learn about how we can potentially help you,” explained Caylao.
If you’re a renter, you can work with your landlord to apply for the grant to reduce flood risk where you live.
“We really want to be able to walk you through, what can be an overwhelming process, at your own pace. If you aren’t ready this season, it’s ok, we will be here next rainy season, ready to help you,” said Caylao.
