Day or night, holiday or weekday, and even throughout the current COVID-19 crisis, SFPUC crews continue their essential roles to fix water main breaks.
Ensuring thousands of people receive high-quality drinking water is a nonstop operation. Here’s a snap shot of what the SFPUC’s crews do every day — to make sure customers have the water they need.

The SFPUC’s water department takes calls from people reporting main breaks all day and night. Pipes can break at all hours of the day, and we must be ready to respond. The central dispatch team works like a police or fire department dispatch center to coordinate response in order to minimize the impact on customers.
Even in the dark, members of the SFPUC crews are first responders. They handle anything from shutting off water so crews can repair pipe breaks and support the fire department during multi-alarm blazes among many things.

After a main break or other emergency water distribution crews fixes the problem so customers can have water service restored as soon as possible.
The SFPUC will continue to provide customers millions of gallons high-quality drinking water. It is no small task, but it is all in a day’s work for the SFPUC.
With San Francisco residents currently under the City’s orders to shelter-in-place, it’s even more critical that the SFPUC continues its essential services and responds to repairs.
